Technology: Crossover
The crossover is a key part of the OmniMon design. It manages the smooth transition between the omni-directional and mono-polar domains of the system. This requirement has to be balanced with the need for wide bandwidth and good power handling from the ribbon.
Technical details: Woofer: 1st order. Ribbon: 3rd order.
Components: Polypropylene film low-loss capacitors; air-core
inductors; wire-wound vitreous enamelled resistors. The filters
have been carefully designed to avoid “ringing” and unwanted
component interaction. The crossover is point-to-point
hardwired without the use of a printed circuit board.
The crossover is in an external ‘quiet’ box, away from the
high vibration environment inside the enclosure. The box is
welded stainless steel, heavily damped with compressed
sand, which also locks the components tightly in place. It is
connected by an umbilical cable using professional quality
Neutrik ‘Speakon’ connectors. Input is via four bi-wire, gold
plated, sheathed binding posts that accept 4mm plugs,
spades or bare wire.
